Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Rymer Liriano was involved in a frightening incident on Sunday afternoon when he took a pitch straight to the face during a Spring Training game in Arizona. Liriano was struck by a fastball from Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Matt West in the eighth inning, and the scene afterwards was reportedly not pretty.

Those nearby said that Liriano’s left eye immediately swelled up and that his nose “was gushing blood.” Brewers infielder Jake Elmore, who was hitting two batters behind Liriano, had this to say after the game:

“We couldn’t really see it from the field. The guys were saying that his nose was gushing blood and it really hadn’t stopped when he came in here,” Elmore said in the clubhouse.

“They said it just ticked the side of his helmet and got his cheek area. You know that the sound is different. That slap against the flesh. That’s when you know it’s not good,” he said.

Liriano was immediately stabilized on the field and then carted off the field to be transported to a nearby hospital. Brewers manager Craig Counsel didn’t provide many details after the game, just saying “he’s conscious but … it’s serious.”
